7 Mother's Day Craft Ideas for Sunday School

This post offers you 7 Mother's Day Sunday School crafts that are fun and also based on the Bible. These craft ideas offered here have not been done a million times before...
Note: The Sunday School crafts below about Mothers are for a wide range of ages from younger children to teens. The first few are simple and it gets more complex as you go down the list!
All of these Mothers Day Sunday School crafts are designed to be made by little hands with lotsa love!
Mother's Day is more than just a marketing scheme - it's an opportunity to thank Moms for being there, every day.
Kids church is more than entertainment, it is about sowing the seeds of faith. Each of these crafts have a deeper Biblical meaning and functions as a discipleship tool.
Let's dive in!
1 - Holding Mama's Hand Forever
(Reminder, the more complex crafts & activities are below)
Have kids trace their own hands and cut out the shape. Write their name & the date on the back as a special reminder to mom of how little their child's hand was at this age.
They can write on it 'I want to hold your hand forever' or decorate it with craft supplies.
This craft fits in well with the Mother's Day Lesson blog I wrote. It has a story about a little seedling, named Sprout who grew up under Mama Tree's shade. The story builds on themes found in The Prodigal Son (Luke 15), The Vine and the Branches (John 15) , and God's protection as shade (Psalm 121).
Supplies needed:
colored paper, scissors, crayons or pencils, craft supplies

2- Mothers Day Craft Ideas -Coloring Picture Card
Print the following picture to create a mini coloring picture that Moms can keep as a bookmark in their Bibles. This picture is a beautiful way to help kids express the love they have for their mamas.
Remind the kids that God loves them so much - there's more than enough love for them to share some of it with their moms. Use this free lesson on the love of God.
Supplies needed:Printer and printer paper, coloring supplies like crayons or pencils

If you enjoy this kind of free-hand digital drawing, you might be interested in my Coloring Book on the
Gospel of Luke. Available for $8 (or the equilavent in whatever currency you're working with, here in South Africa it's R150). Here's some more info:
What makes this kind of smaller craft so special is that Moms can keep it... They're flooded with countless A4 pages that (honestly) in up in the trash. By printing on A5, you make it much easier for parents to hang onto crafts as keepsakes. Personally, I'm not a very sentimental person but I hang on to smaller notes by keeping them inside my Bible!

3- The women at the tomb coloring picture
Here we take a broader perspective and focus on how Jesus included women in His ministry. Jesus' resurrection was first witnessed by Roman guards and then female disciples - unlikely sources, which has actually proved that it's not a made-up tale. Jesus really rose from the dead!
He always treated women with respect. He placed them central in His ministry. Even Jesus had a mother, whom he loved to the end.
Without getting into social debates or political things, there's something to be said about a day set apart with the sole purpose of honoring the women in our lives. Most sermons, songs, and Bible verses are full of words and imagery focused on men. This Mother's Day, God wants to remind moms that they are seen. Let the kids write on the picture: You have a special place in God's story!
Print the Women-at-the-Tomb coloring picture below & teach the kids that God cares about moms. <3
Alternatively, doodle your own coloring picture for the kids by using a thick black marker and a plain white page. You can take a photo of your picture with your phone and print it, or scan it in on your printer. Tada! Your very own custom coloring picture.
Pro tip: Edit the 'contrast' of the photo of your drawing so that the white bits don't print as gray.
Age group:
The idea behind this image / lesson is very abstract so it's a better option for older kids or even young teens.
Supplies needed:
Printer, printer paper, coloring supplies like crayons or pencils

4- Thank you Mom, letter
You can explain it to them in these simple statements -
THANKS says, "I appreciate you. I thank you. I love you."
The opposite of thanking someone is to take them for granted, saying "I want more. I deserve this."
"So, let's take the time to THANK our moms for the amazing things they do every day".
(If seeing what to say is helpful, check out this post on the words behind a successful kids church program)
Fold construction paper in half. Have Sunday school kids draw a picture of Mom on the one side and write on the other. This free Bible lesson teaches kids the difference that saying thank you can make in their relationship with their mamas.
Tip: In my years of facilitating kids programs, I've found that most often, kids need to see a visual example when they're tasked to draw something by themselves. You can either print out an AI-generated picture above or you can draw your own one before class. If you have a chalk board or white board, draw it on there. That way the less-confident ones when it comes to art can copy your picture.
OPTION: Print out the following pretty list and have kids write down all the things they want to thank Mom for...
Doing so will not only be a one-and-done activity. You are teaching kids about gratitude and thankfulness. Not only does the Bible say that it is transformative; more and more studies are finding that practicing gratitude rewires the brain and creates new neural pathways. You are showing kids a way to renew their thoughts about their moms, which can heal relationships and infuse them with lots of joy!
Age group:
This activity is better for older kids or teens who can write well. You could talk to younger kiddo's and write down what they tell you, but that will be more time-consuming and require 1-on-1 assistance. (Good for smaller groups!)
Supplies needed: Paper, Crayons, or Pencils

5- Intentional snacktime on Mother's Day
Hand out pretzel sticks, jelly sweets, and M&M's. Optional, give each kid a paper plate. Then, have them "pack out" their mom with the sweets. Like, the example below I made with AI. Snap a photo of each kid's Mom-is-sweet creation and print it out with a note, "Mom you're sweet! Love [child's name]"
This craft is ideal if you can do it a week in advance OR send the pic later in the day (Edit it after church and text the digital image to each mom)
I have a full guide for using food in creative ways like this to teach kids about the Bible.
Supplies needed: paper plates, different shapes of sweets, writing supplies (optional: camera, printer)

"Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it." - Proverbs 22:6
6- Thanks Bouquet
Mothers typically love flowers and they often receive craft bouquets on Mother's Day. Churches and schools usually give each mom a single rose or something like that - but what if we could give something that keeps on giving?
I started a garden last year and growing flowers from seed has been one of the most rewarding aspects! Growing flowers like poppies, dahlias, and zinnias aren't difficult at all. This Mother's Day gift has the added benefit that it encourages a new healthy hobby / activity for Mom.
Use a few pipe cleaners and have the kids shape them into flowers. Then, buy some flower seeds and make mixed bags. Optional: Add a card that says "May love continue to grow this year. Love you Mom!" OR "A bouquet that keeps on growing, like my love for you!" -Too cheesy? ;)
Age group:
This activity looks simple enough for a toddler to do it, but it can actually be quite tricky. I'd suggest this for older kids or even teenagers. More advanced kiddo's or teens can try making different kinds of flowers beyond the basic shape. Remember that some seeds can be a hazard if toddlers eat it & pipe cleaners are quite sharp and stabby!
Supplies needed: Pipe cleaners, beads, flower seeds, bags, cards, ribbons, writing supplies

7- My Lovely Family Painted stones
Hand out stones and have each kid paint a family portrait on their stone.
This is a nice small gift that Mom can put in the garden or by the front door / porch.
It's always funny to see how kids depict different family members. From a psychological point of view, these pictures may even help you to see what each kid feels about their home situation. Ask open-ended questions like: Why is your brother standing off to the side? Remember, your #1 goal is to support the family and partner with parents in discipling their child.
Pro Tip: Take a photograph of completed crafts that kids take home and put it up in your Sunday school classroom for a reminder of all you've created together.
Painting can be messy... but also lots of fun! I'd suggest pulling in an extra volunteer or two on a day where you attempt this knd of craft. I've also found it helpful to not pack out things like paint beforehand. It helps to do 1 color at a time. "OK, everyone let's start by painting the grass under our family portrait."
Age group:
The Mother's Day Craft Ideas listed above are more simple, with this one probably being the most complex. Even teenagers could enjoy this activity. Make it more complex by painting on Canvas or using watercolors to encourage older kids to engage fully. For artistic kids, have them create one-line drawings or make collages of their family members. Optional add on: Let older kids or teens write down the best characteristic of each family member passed down from mom - e.g. "Sally got mom's sense of adventure. Tony has mom's laugh. And I have mom's eyes to see the world is a good place."
Supplies needed: Smooth stones, paint, paintbrushes, water, wet wipes (to clean hands), craft aprons (to keep clothes clean)

"These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up." - Deuteronomy 6:6-7
Writing this post of Mother's Day Craft Ideas was so much fun! I am on the brink of becoming a mother myself - this is my last Mother's Day where I'm not a mama yet, so I feel each of these craft activities on a deep heart level.
May these little ideas help you facilitate a Mother's Day program that shares the love, x
